Botswana: DCI +0.05%, USD 39k

Nothing on the go in Gaborone today as value traded amounted to USD 39k with Choppies accounting for 83% of turnover.

Egypt: EGX 30 -0.76%, USD 85m

The market traded on mixed sentiment today to end the day in negative territory, with the EGX30 down 0.76% to close at 6,801.33 points. Market volumes continued to improve relative to daily average turnover, with worth USD 85m changing hands. There was pressure from institutional investors who had been notable buyers recently. Names such as COMI, ETEL, and PHDC witnessed selling pressure with each ending the day down 1.03%, 1.30% and 1.13%. The stocks had been pressured on significant low volumes compared to their daily average turnovers. Locals, mainly retail investors, continued their buying momentum and ended the day as the sole net buyers, targeting names such as AIND, SVCE, and AMER leaving each to end the day up 7.19%, 2.96%, and 3.90% respectively.

Kenya: NSE 20 +0.80%, USD 4.0m

Another rather dull day in Nairobi as value traded amounted to $4.0m. The market however managed to recover with the NSE 20 Index gaining 0.80% to close at 4,940.50. Safcom drove activity as foreign demand (88.6%) drove the name higher (+2.30%) with 12.2m shares changing hands. Foreign activity also dominated proceedings in EABL as 192k shares traded. Locals dominated both purchases and sales in Equity Bank with the name gaining 3.9% to close at KES 33.00. The IMF Managing Director, Christine Lagarde was in the country for a three day visit in which she said that the country was well positioned to raise funds in the international markets through a sovereign bond.

Mauritius: Semdex +0.45%, USD 1.01m

A large cross in Alteo of 360k shares drove activity (44% of turnover) today as value traded amounted to USD 1.01m. There was also a cross of 6.8m SBM at Rs1.04 which helped boost proceedings. Not much on the go in MCB and NMH as 23k shares and 9.4k shares traded in the names respectively.

Nigeria: ASI +0.14%, USD 18.2m

There was a sharp reversal in banking stocks today as the Bank Index fell -1.15% with profit taking continuing in Zenith (-3.55%). Guaranty Trust Bank (-1.32%) and First Bank (-0.61%) also drove the sector lower. Activity was on the low end with value traded amounting to $18.2m with no large crosses to speak of. ETI ($3.09m), First Bank ($2.24m) and UBA ($2.13m) were amongst the day's most active. Consumers (+0.31%) managed to close the day higher with Guinness (+1.24%) and Nigerian Breweries (+1.20%) driving the sector higher.

South Africa: Top 40 -0.61%, USD 753m

The JSE ended the day lower with the Top 40 Index falling 0.61% to close at 41,164 while value traded amounted to USD 753m. Financials were the day's biggest losers with the Index falling 1.30% followed by Industrials and Resources which fell 0.62% and 0.20% respectively. The Rand was trading at 10.65 and 14.50 to the USD and EUR respectively by the time local markets closed.

Zimbabwe: Industrials -0.29%, Mining -3.73%, USD 740k

The ZSE opened the week on the downside as both the Industrial and Mining indices were in the red as trades continued to be thin on the bourse. The Industrial Index fell -0.29% and closed the day at 200.45pts as ZSE shares failed to find firm ground to get the first gain of the new year. Minings were similarly down though by a bigger margin of -3.73% closing the day at 45.79pts weighed down by goldminers Falgold that fell 20% to 4c scooping the daily top fallers slot. Foreign demand drove much of the activity today as inflows improved 469% to $0.54m and this represented 72% of the day’s total value with stocks of interest being Inncsor and CBZ. Outflows on the other hand amounted to $0.2m and was down -39.23% leaving the balance of payments in a net inflow position.
