Activity was once again decent in Nairobi although foreigners were largely absent (accounting for less than 25% of the market). The most active name was EABL which gained 2.6% to KES350.00. This was almost the only foreign trading that took place today. The other active names were the likes of Bamburi, Barclays, Carbacid, Safcom and Limuru Tea and almost 100% of this was local trading. According to rumours, the NSE might be suspended until the local brokerage community can get clarification on the new CGT rules.
After a painfully quiet start we saw activity pick up throughout the day although crosses still heavily dominate the market. Banks gave back some of their recent strength as they closed down 8bps. Activity was heavily focused on GTB (+96bps, N21.00), Zenith (-2.27%, N17.20) and Access (+1.08%, N5.60). Consumers gained a solid 1.43% with activity and direction driven by NB (+1.12%, N133.85) and Nestle (+3.64%, N819.99). The general market was rather quiet.
Please note that the index figure above is correct at the time of writing.
